The Halftime Show Best Of 2011

This past Wednesday (1/4/12) we held our Best of 2011 show on “The Halftime Show” 89.1FM WNYU. As always, we pick the most played/best 30 songs that we aired along with the top 30 freestyles from artists that visited the show. (Note that we consider the year to be from Dec-Nov being that music dropping in Dec. doesn’t have enough time to become a “most played” joint). Aside from our top picks we also named a ton of albums that came out in 2011 worth purchasing. ILL BILL RECORDING NEW SOLO ALBUM, “THE GRIMY AWARDS”

ILL BILL’S newest solo effort is in the works now. See the latest below from hiphopdx.com:

“Veteran Brooklyn, New York emcee/producer Ill Bill announced with the new year that he is recording a 2012 solo album, The Grimy Awards. After collaborative projects with Jedi Mind Tricks’ Vinnie Paz (Heavy Metal Kings) and Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs, (Kill Devil Hills) this is Bill’s first completely solo outing since 2008′s acclaimed Hour of Reprisal.

The La Coka Nostra member and co-founder of Non-Phixion exclusively told HipHopDX that he’s working with the likes of Gang Starr’s DJ Premier, The Beatnuts’ Psycho Les, MoSS, Stu Bangas, C-Lance and House of Pain’s DJ Lethal on production. More details on the album will be announced, as Bill is looking at third or fourth quarter, 2012 release. A label has yet to be announced. Previously, Ill Bill has worked with Fat Beats Records and Suburban Noize Records, in addition to his own Uncle Howie Records imprint.

Before that, La Coka Nostra has Masters of The Dark Arts planned for spring, 2012 release. Earlier this week, they released a video from that album, ‘Malverde Market.’”

Joe Fatal on The Halftime Show 9/14/11

When Nas jumped on Large Professor’s Main Source crew’s “Live At The Barbeque” back in ’91 there were also a couple other dudes on that track that were then unknowns. One was Akinyele and the other was Joe Fatal. Ak went on to have a pretty good recording career while Fatal’s dimmed out around ’93. Bad contracts and problems with the law are largely to blame. But Fatal was more of a DJ and producer anyway. Before he even spit that now infamous verse on BBQ he was DJing for Tragedy (see Intelligent Hoodlum album) and also producing (see ILL BILL’s first appearance “Dope Fiend”). 20 years later the original BBQ crew reunited at Rock The Bells for an appearance during Nas’ set which allowed me to reconnect with Fatal.
